Cardiff and Newport roads flood after days of heavy rain

There are flood alerts in place in south Wales after two days of heavy rain. There is an alert on the River Cadoxton in Barry and on rivers in South Pembrokeshire after what Natural Resources Wales describes as "adverse weather".

Flooding has closed part of a major Newport road. The A4042 is closed northbound near the Crown Roundabout. Meanwhile, some roads in Cardiff are also flooded including Penylan Road, near the Roath Recreation Ground car park, and on Ael Y Bryn and Circle Way West in Llanedyrn.

A weather warning for rain is in place for some parts of south east Wales until 6pm on Monday, December 4. It comes as the cold weather moves away to leave 'milder, wetter and much windier' weather. See the full details here.

The forecast for Wales tonight says: "Staying damp this evening and overnight with further rain and drizzle and some snow over higher ground. Icy patches possible in some areas with poor visibility over higher ground. Cold. Minimum temperature 0 °C."

Across the border, there are more than 20 flood warnings across south-west England. The Environment Agency has issued 28 flood warnings, mainly in Dorset and Somerset, as heavy rain is causing river levels to rise.

National Highways said the A303 in Somerset was closed eastbound between the A37/A372 at Podimore and the A359 near Sparkford because of flooding, with no time estimated for when it would reopen.

Flooding has blocked the railway line between Taunton and Westbury, affecting Great Western Railway (GWR) and CrossCountry services. GWR trains to London are being diverted via Bristol, extending journey times by up to two hours.
