Car crashes into man, 24, fleeing gang attack in hit-and-run horror

A man has been left seriously injured after being attacked then hit by a car as he tried to escape a gang chasing him, detectives in Manchester have revealed.

Increased police stop and search powers have been put into force covering a large defined area of north Manchester tonight after what police called a 'targeted' attack. The zone involved includes an area of Moston and Monsall.

As reported in the Manchester Evening News, emergency services initially responded to reports of a road traffic collision on Moston Lane in Moston at around 1.15pm today, Friday. In an updated statement, Greater Manchester Police said following enquiries, it was established a 24 year-old man was 'attacked prior to being hit by a vehicle whilst being chased by a group of males'.

He's said to remain in hospital, with his injuries described as being 'serious'. North West Ambulance Service told the M.E.N. he suffered a hip injury.

A BMW, with smashed windows, was pictured within the police cordon as a stretch of Moston Lane was sealed off. The zone stretches from Boggart Hole Clough down through Monsall.

GMP said in a statement: "A 31 year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of failing to stop following a road traffic collision and remains in custody for questioning. Our dedicated local detectives are continuing to investigate and are actively seeking to trace and arrest other suspects.

"A Section 60 has also been authorised across an area of Moston and Monsall, following this incident. Under a Section 60, officers have extra powers to stop and search people in defined areas within a specific timeframe until just before 5pm on Saturday 31 August 2024.
