Car busts into flames and sparks traffic chaos in Saddleworth

A car burst into flames sparking traffic chaos in Saddleworth this evening. It happened on Manchester Road in Greenfield shortly before 4:30pm.

Pictures from the scene showed a car, believed to be a BMW, engufled by flames with smoke sent billowing around the area, close to the The Royal George pub.

Fire crews and police raced to the scene and blocked the road as firefighters donned breathing apparatus to tackle the flames. No one is said to have been injured.

Large queues built up whilst crews dealt with the incident, and awaited the removal of the car's burnt-out shell. Locals reported congestion in the area for a number of hours afterwards

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 4.20pm today (Tuesday, September 3) one fire engine from Mossley Community Fire Station was called to reports of a car on fire on Manchester Road, Greenfield.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel to extinguish the fire and make the surrounding area safe. Crews were in attendance for around 40 minutes.”
