Car becomes engulfed in flames near Manchester Airport

A car became completely engulfed in flames in the early hours of Monday morning (April 11) as the driver was heading towards Manchester Airport. Dramatic images show the car, a Ford Fiesta, alight as fire crews tackled the blaze.

The fire broke out on the Manchester Airport Eastern Link Road (A555) near Poynton, near the airport, at around 12.33am, with crews tackling the blaze for over an hour. Cheshire Police also attended the scene while the westbound carriageway of the road was closed off.

There were no reports of any injuries or anyone being trapped inside the vehicle. Pictures also showed the devastating aftermath of the fire, with the car visibly damaged at the front.

In an incident update, Cheshire Fire and Rescue service said: "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel water jet to put out a hatchback vehicle well alight. No one was hurt in the fire, which required one lane of the carriageway to be closed. The vehicle was later recovered."

Poynton Fire Station posted the dramatic images on social media this morning, showing crews tackling the flames in the early hours of Monday morning. The road reopened at around 1.30am.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "At 00.40am on Monday 11 April police were called to reports of a car fire on the A555 near Poynton. Officers attended the scene and found that the incident involved one vehicle. There were no reports of any injuries although the road was closed while firefighters dealt with the incident."
