Canterbury Golf Club's Enzo Avery named Professional Golfers Association South Region Assistant Professional of the Year for 2022

By Steve Acteson

Canterbury Golf Club's Enzo Avery has been named Professional Golfers Association South Region Assistant Professional of the Year for 2022.

Avery, 24, was presented with his award at a ceremony after the PGA’s annual meeting at Kingswood GC at Tadworth, Surrey, by PGA chairman Alan White on February 8 with the PGA’s CEO Robert Maxfield also in attendance.

He won £250 but, when Enzo was emailed by the PGA, saying he’d won and asking for his bank details, he thought it was a scam.

Avery said: “I hadn’t actually been looking at my emails and I had about six from the PGA, inviting me to the awards ceremony and then chasing me up for my bank details.

“I thought it was a scam! We had an email from the PGA at the beginning of December, saying to be careful if we received any suspicious emails because there were some scams going around.

“The award was for best assistant professional in the south region, which is the biggest PGA region and goes all the way down to Southampton and all the way up through London and into Essex.

“It came out of the blue. It was completely unexpected and a very nice surprise.

“I was elated and felt very proud of myself.

“The award was based on Academic results so, in essence, I was the top Academic assistant professional in my year group.”

Club captain Mark Broadhurst said: “Enzo is a massive asset to Canterbury Golf Club.

“He’s fantastic with the juniors, he’s great with the members and I wish him all the best for the future.

“The award is only what I’d expect from Enzo; he gives 110%, he goes above and beyond and the award is a just reward for all the effort he puts in.”
