Candidates selected for Trafford council Bucklow St Martins by-election

Candidates have selected for a by-election in Trafford following the resignation of a local councillor. They will vie for the seat left vacant following the resignation of Adele New in the Bucklow St Martins ward, which covers Carrington, Partington and part of Sale.

Polling takes place on Thursday, November 2 with votes to be counted the following day. Ms New received more votes than her two ward colleagues, Coun Aidan Williams and James Wright, in the local elections in May but last month said a ‘change of priorities’ led to her immediate resignation.

She said: "Over the summer months my priorities have changed and I have enjoyed time I have spent with my family on evenings and weekends instead of rushing off to meetings, casework, campaigning, community work and other demands upon my time in addition to working."

The candidates are: Frances Cosby (Labour), Matthew Sellars (Lib Dem), Paul Lally (Conservative), Paul Swansborough (Reform UK) and Rodrigo Capucho Paulo (Green).

Sara Todd, the council's chief executive and returning officer, said: "What we do as a council makes a difference to people's lives so it is important for people to have a say.

"It only takes five minutes to register to vote so please check you can vote and please go and vote. It will make sure you have a say in all the local issues which affect you."

All voters need to be registered and to be in possession of a Voter ID as per the rules introduced this year.
