Closure date for migrant hotel announced as council claims they were 'sidestepped' by Home Office

The decision to house asylum seekers in a plush Wigan hotel was only announced in August - but now it is set to close in March 2024 following a Home Office announcement.

Kilhey Court in the Worthington area of Standish was chosen as the second site in the village to house migrants - the other being the Britannia Hotel. The choice of location led to huge protests from locals, who believed the hotel was an unsuitable location due to its lack of access to local amenities, limited public transport, and being on a national speed limit road without a pavement on the doorstep.

Following the government decision to close the hotel to asylum seekers, Wigan Council say they are now happy but have criticised the Home Office for 'sidestepping' them when it came to making the initial decision in August.

Councillor Dane Anderton, cabinet member for police, crime and civil contingencies at Wigan Council, said: “On Monday morning we received confirmation from the Home Office that Kilhey Court is being stood down in its use to house asylum seekers by March 2024 following the concerns we have raised. We welcome this news and thank all those who showed patience and persistence in ensuring our concerns were heard, and to all those who have supported our efforts to raise these concerns through the correct channels.
