Canadian shot putter Sarah Mitton places 2nd at Diamond League Final

Canada’s Sarah Mitton finished second in the women’s shot put event at the Diamond League Final at King Baudouin Stadium on Friday in Brussels. 

Mitton, 30, delivered her best throw on her first attempt, a 20.64-metre toss to finish behind American Chase Jackson.

The 32-year-old won her third Diamond League Final with a best throw of 21.14m.

Jackson, a two-time world champion, threw .012 metres beyond her personal best to win. 

The Netherland’s Jessica Schilder placed third after a 20.57m effort on her third attempt.

Mitton, who successfully defending her Commonwealth Games title in July, was attempting to capture her Diamond League Trophy for a second time in three years.

A year ago, she was stripped of the title following a successful protest of her winning throw.

The Brooklyn, N.S., native's second attempt measured 20.67 metres but, following a review by judges, Mitton was ruled to have stepped out of the throwing circle before the shot hit the ground, thereby making her throw invalid. It also appeared she clipped the front toe board.
