Canada to play for 2028 Olympic berth in men's volleyball against Cuba or Dominican Republic

Canada is inching closer to a 2028 Olympic berth in men’s indoor volleyball.

The world’s 13th-ranked team can secure their spot for Los Angeles on Saturday with a victory over Cuba or the Dominican Republic in the gold-medal game at 6 p.m. ET in Moncton, N.B.

For the second time this week, Canada’s 14-member squad swept Mexico 3-0 in sets, by scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-13 on Friday.

The Canadians, fresh off Wednesday's five-set defeat to the United States in the gold-medal match of the NORCECA Continental Championship, outscored Mexico in attack points (42-31), blocks (8-0) and aces (8-2) at Avenir Centre.

The Canadian men’s squad has competed at six Summer Games, achieving its best result with a fourth-place finish in 1984, also in L.A.

Canada also swept the Mexicans in 2024 Olympic qualifying and placed 10th in Paris.

In 2016, Mexico finished 11th in Rio after ending a 48-year Olympic absence.

On Tuesday in Moncton, Canada earned a semifinal win over Cuba to clinch its spot at the World Cup in Poland next Sept. 10-26.
