TeamTalk editor James Marshment suggested the soon-to-be free agent goalkeeper Ben Foster would be a ‘smart move’ for Leeds United.
Speaking on the Just Joe Football Show, Marshment said: “I think we’d be wise to bring in someone like Ben Foster.”
“He can still play in the Premier League. He said he’s happy to play as a number two – which is ideal. He’s had time in the north before having played for Manchester United, but we’ll not talk about them.
“To me, get him on a free transfer. He’s quality backup and someone who can keep Illan Meslier on his toes, and guide his career a little bit. I just think it’d be a really smart move.”
Marshment makes a fair point, too. On a free transfer, when looking for a backup goalkeeper, you can’t really go wrong with Foster. With 390 top flight appearances, he is an extremely experienced goalkeeper who could be perfect for Meslier, too, who wasn’t without his mistakes last season.
At 39-year-old, some may see Foster as a finished shot-stopper, but, as a backup, he still has plenty to offer, especially when considering the fact that he was Watford’s number one all throughout last season.
We think Foster should be on Leeds United’s summer shortlist. We’ve seen clubs bring in experienced backups like the ex-Watford number one before, and go on to play big roles for the club.
For the dressing room, alone, someone of Foster’s character could provide a huge boost to Jesse Marsch’s side. The likes of Scott Carson have had similar impacts at Manchester City. Even though game-time was never regular, Carson was looked at as an important member of the squad.
The fact that Foster played consistently so recently, too, means that he could still prove to be a great asset on the pitch for most sides.
