Campaign returns to raise awareness of disease that more young women are being diagnosed with every year

Every 10 minutes a woman in the UK is diagnosed with breast cancer. It is a sobering statistic and now research shows more younger women are being told they have the disease each year.

Most women diagnosed with breast cancer are over the age of 50 but more and more younger women are now being diagnosed. Around 2,300 women under 40 are diagnosed with the disease each year in the UK, according to the charity Breast Cancer Now.

In the face of the alarming statistics the Wythenshawe-based charity Prevent Breast Cancer is launching its third Boobee campaign since 2019 to spread awareness of the disease throughout Greater Manchester and beyond.

Margo Cornish, a Patron of Prevent Breast Cancer and the founder of the BooBee campaign, said: “In 2019, the first time we did the campaign they were saying one in nine women would be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, it’s now one in seven and more younger women.

“Out of those one in seven around one in three will go on to be diagnosed with secondary breast cancer.”

This year the campaign has added a new layer by highlighting the challenges faced by women living with secondary breast cancer and also supporting the Make 2nds Count charity.

Secondary (or metastatic) breast cancer is when breast cancer spreads from the breast to other parts of the body, becoming incurable.
