Cameron Dawson’s current situation at Sheffield Wednesday becomes clearer

Cameron Dawson will be given a chance to compete for a place in Sheffield Wednesday’s starting eleven during pre-season, according to a report from Yorkshire Live.

It is understood that Owls manager Darren Moore does not want to sell or loan out Dawson this summer.

A separate report from Yorkshire Live recently revealed that Wednesday have rejected loan offers from Aberdeen and St Johnstone for the shot-stopper.

Dawson joined Exeter City last year on a temporary basis and went on to feature regularly for the club in League Two.

During the 45 league games that he participated in, the keeper managed to claim 18 clean-sheets as the Grecians secured promotion to the third-tier.

No longer able to call upon the services of Bailey Peacock-Farrell following the expiry of his loan spell, Wednesday opted to bolster their options in this particular position by signing David Stockdale on a free transfer earlier this week.

Stockdale is set to officially link up with the Owls after his current deal at Wycombe Wanderers reaches a crescendo at the end of June.

Joe Wildsmith is not set to compete with Dawson and Stockdale for a place in Wednesday’s side next season as he has turned down a contract offer and thus will become a free-agent this summer.

The Verdict

When you consider that Dawson did manage to produce a host of assured performances for Exeter in the fourth-tier last season, it is hardly a surprise that Wednesday want him to stay at Hillsborough.

The keeper made 2.3 saves per game at this level and only made two errors which led to goals as he recorded an average Sofa Score match rating of 6.85.

Dawson will need to showcase his ability in pre-season in order to have the best chance of moving above Stockdale in the pecking order
