Cameron Burgess offers verdict on Ipswich Town’s play-off chances with five games remaining

Ipswich Town defender Cameron Burgess has admitted Ipswich Town’s now only have an ‘outside chance’ of making the play-offs this season. 

The Tractor Boys were defeated 1-0 at home to Cambridge United on Saturday afternoon, meaning they now sit ninth in the League One standings, eight points behind the play-off positions.

Given there are just five games left to play this season, Burgess admits they now only have an outside chance of making the top six, but that they’ll aim to win every game and give themselves a chance regardless.

“It’s definitely an outside chance,” admitted Burgess, via Suffolk news.

“But that doesn’t mean we aren’t going to try and win every single game, like we would anyway.

“Nothing has really changed on that front.”

Internally, it appears that the players have been looking at past and present League One tables, and personally, Burgess said he is setting a target of reaching 74 points for the campaign – a tally that would see them into the top six most other seasons.

Burgess explained that he thought this would be a good achievement, given the club’s start to their league campaign.

“We have looked at it before, and it has been every season bar one, maybe, if you get 74 point you’re in the play-offs. Obviously not this one.” Burgess continued.

“So I think from me on a personal note it would be pretty good to get to that 74 point mark or hopefully a little bit more, and at least we can be sort of happy with that given the start we had to the season.

“And it puts us in good stead for hopefully a successful season next season if we aren’t able to sneak in this season.”

Ipswich face Shrewsbury away from home on Saturday afternoon, with kick-off set for 3pm at the Montgomery Waters Meadow.
