Cambuslang Rugby Club job is in James Brown's sights as he takes team forward

Interim boss James Brown hopes to eventually land the Cambuslang Rugby Club top job after getting off to the perfect start on Saturday.

Brown’s first West League 1 game ended in a 25-17 home win over Ardrossan Accies, following a 48-31 National Shield first round win over Strathendrick, and he hopes results like those will land him the hot seat.

The former junior coach has stepped up to head a five-man interim team which also features Kenny Whitelaw, Grant Campbell, Ross Mulligan and John McLaughlin.

And Brown says he is very much in the frame for the job.

He said: “I did put my hat in the ring, but I just think I don’t have enough experience yet. I had three or four seasons in West Three while I was still involved in the junior section.

“If I can get a good year, we can get good results and can get as high as possible then it’s always a good stepping stone to put my name forward and say I want to take it full-time. It’s about trying to build on this.

“Results are the biggest thing in any job – if you don’t get the results then that’s the hard bit. But the buy-in from the players has been really good, and that’s always a bonus.”

Tries from Chad McGlame, Louis Sender, Stuart Newell and Kris Hughes put Cambus on their way to victory against Accies, with Sender enjoying a good day with the boot.

Brown said: “It was a great start but I think they had been building up to it. The boys worked really hard there on Tuesday and Thursday, and even though they [Accies] came down from the National league, I felt with the training we’d had in the last couple of weeks we would be in a good spot to take something from the game.

“There’s a buzz, coming right through from the junior section, and hopefully that feeds on to the first team
