Cambuslang Rangers 'playing for personal pride', admits co-boss

Cambuslang Rangers co-boss Billy Campbell has told his players they’re playing for pride in their remaining West of Scotland Premier Division games.

Campbell has long said he’s not giving anything up in the top-flight until it’s arithmetically impossible to stay up, and that’s still the case – but they’re running out of time.

But with four games left they’re 10 points behind 13th-placed Arthurlie and safety, with only one game in hand.

Having won just six of their 26 games so far, Campbell says they’re running out of games, in a situation that was always going to be a big ask for a club with limited finances and only one committee member.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Pollok kept them rock bottom of the division, and Campbell said: “It’s maybe a step too far, us trying to compete at this level, and we’re running out of time.

“We’ve let ourselves down against Petershill and Kilwinning Rangers [3-0 defeat last Tuesday]– those were two massive games that we needed to try and get points on the board from.

“We needed to pick up points against Glasgow Perthshire, Kilwinning Rangers and Kirkintilloch Rob Roy to claw ourselves back into contention, and we didn’t deliver.

“It’s frustrating, because against the so-called bigger teams like Auchinleck Talbot, Pollok and Cumnock, we’re performed really well, and lost 1-0 or 2-1, so we’ve not been miles away.”

Cambuslang host eighth-placed Troon on Saturday, and Campbell says they have to keep going.

He said: “The results don’t lie, so you just need to get on with it, and we need to keep performing and trying the best we can. I’m trying to explain to the guys about the personal pride they should have in their performances.
