Cambuslang Rangers' Kilmarnock connection helps them snap up experienced striker

A Kilmarnock connection going back 15 years has led to David Cox signing up at Cambuslang Rangers.

The ex-Albion Rovers and Airdrie forward says former Killie under-19s teammate Scott Anson called him and said co-boss Paul McColl wanted to speak to him, which saw the 33-year-old sign on for their West of Scotland League Premier Division campaign.

And Cox, who had retired from the game briefly last year after suffering taunts about his mental health while he was playing for Rovers, said: “I’m happy with the move.

“I wasn’t too sure whether I was going to go back to football or not, and just concentrate on my gym and stuff like that.

“After speaking to my wife, I hadn’t really heard from any clubs or anything, but one of my mates, Scott Anson, that I used to play with when I was a youngster at Kilmarnock plays for Cambuslang as well.

“He got in touch with me and said ‘the gaffer wants to speak to you, would you be willing to talk to him?’ I had a wee chat with Paul, and I’ve ended up signing.

“It will be a good league, your bigger teams are in there like your Darvels and Auchinleck Talbots, who have done well, but we’re confident we can go in and do well.

“Me and Scott played for Kilmarnock as youngsters, at under-19s for three years, and it will be good to get back playing with the big guy, so I’m looking forward to it and seeing what we can do.”

Cox’s previous clubs reads like a who’s who of lower league football, having played for the likes of Annan, Montrose, Peterhead, Cowdenbeath and Brechin, and he’s delighted to have a club a lot closer to home.
