Callum Paterson looks to the future after Sheffield Wednesday's play-off disappointment

Callum Paterson has expressed his disappointment after Sheffield Wednesday missed out on promotion to League One.

The Owls suffered an agonising League One play-off defeat to Sunderland on aggregate, losing 2-1 after the Black Cats scored a stoppage time winner through winger Patrick Roberts.

Paterson, contracted to Wednesday until 2023, came on off the bench on Monday to make his 45th appearance in all competitions for Wednesday.

The 27-year-old posted on Twitter: "Not the way we wanted to end the season. A year of ups and downs. Thanks everyone for the support, great to see Hillsborough full of fans again. On to next season."

Paterson's Owls team-mate, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, has also taken to Instagram to send a message to the supporters. The wide man posted a picture of him applauding the fans alongside a captionthat read: “Thank you for your support this season, sorry it didn’t tend the way were all wanted but couldn’t be prouder of my teammates and the support we received week in week out was unbelievable! Enjoy your summer people! Time to unwind and recharge the batteries. #nml41."

Mendez-Laing is among a number of players, including Massimo Luongo and Sam Hutchinson, due to become a free agent next month.
