Call of Duty: Game will continue to release on PlayStation if Xbox acquisition goes ahead

Call of Duty will continue to be released on PlayStation even if Microsoft, the owners of Xbox, acquire Activision Blizzard, it has been confirmed.

Video Games Chronicle carries a report that reveals that the wildly popular first-person shooter will continue to be a multiplatform release even if the game’s developers are bought out by Microsoft.

Microsoft is currently attempting a takeover of Activision that is worth in excess of $68 billion, but the deal has yet to be fully confirmed.

Nevertheless, Xbox’s boss, Phil Spencer, has now confirmed that they do not intend to wall off Call of Duty by making it an exclusive title.

That will be good news to anyone who was worried that Call of Duty may not be available on their console of choice moving forward.

Spencer has confirmed the following: “In January, we provided a signed agreement to Sony to guarantee Call of Duty on PlayStation, with feature and content parity, for at least several more years beyond the current Sony contract, an offer that goes well beyond typical gaming industry agreements.”

That quote was given to The Verge in a statement.

VGC notes that Bloomberg previously carried a report claiming that Activision had signed a contract that meant they were obligated to release three more titles on PlayStation.

That may well include Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2, as well as the next Call of Duty release. It isn’t clear if that will come in 2023 or 2024.

Call of Duty is a gigantic seller, and, as per Tweaktown, the franchise has sold 425 million copies to date.

That is the total number, so will include all of their releases: Call of Duty 4, the original Modern Warfare 2, as well as all of the Black Ops titles.
