Buxton 2 Chatham Town 1 match report (after extra time): Buxton captain Connor Kirby’s sensational strike settles FA Cup first-round tie after striker Tope Fadahunsi had put Chats in front
A heroic Chatham display wasn't quite enough as they suffered an extra-time FA Cup first-round defeat at Buxton on Saturday.
Top scorer Tope Fadahunsi had put the promotion-chasing Isthmian Premier team ahead early in the second half.
But National League North high-fliers Buxton equalised through Tate Campbell before captain Connor Kirby came up with a world-class long-range strike as it ended 2-1 to the hosts after a breathless 120-minute tie.
The in-form hosts, who had headed into the game on a six-match winning run, started well and created the first opportunity when right-back Louis Stephenson saw his attempted fifth-minute drive get charged down.
Four minutes later, goalkeeper Henry Molyneux nearly gifted Buxton the lead from a captain Reece Butler throw, making a mess of controlling possession, but cleared off his own goal-line.
But 20-year-old Molyneux made amends as he produced a fantastic save to tip wide Campbell’s effort after the ball had fallen kindly to the midfielder.
Chatham first threatened when keeper Joe Young stayed big to save striker Stanley Oldfield’s 18th-minute effort before the 23-year-old thwarted midfielder Kian Moynes as he reached a right-wing Ollie Evans delivery.
"The best goal he will ever score!"
