Burnley off to strong start but Vincent Kompany's transfer priority laid bare at Huddersfield
Vincent Kompany's first Burnley XI contained five of nine new signings, and six debutants.
This is a new-look Clarets, both in personnel and style as the Kompany era begins. The opening night win at Huddersfield means things are off to an encouraging start as Ian Maatsen's first half goal gave Burnley three points.
It was a dominant first half showing from the Clarets and they were rarely troubled in a more even second. Kompany was pleased with the performance but still wants to add to his ranks over the final month of the window. With Jay Rodriguez injured, teenager Dara Costelloe was pressed into action for a senior debut and while Scott Twine came off the bench for 20 minutes, he is seen as a number 10 rather than a central striker, meaning the squad shortcomings up front were laid bare.
It's not just at the top end of the pitch where we could see additions, the attacking midfield roles could also use fresh faces. Dwight McNeil departed for Everton yesterday and Maxwel Cornet is not involved amid continued speculation around his future with the Ivory Coast international almost certain to leave in the coming weeks. And, with Johann Berg Gudmundsson also being managed on his return to fitness, it means Burnley have to strengthen in attack.
Kompany is still expected to add further to his squad and knows the absence of frontmen is a crucial area to address while he still wants a centre half to add experience to what is a relatively inexperienced backline. And, with Ashley Barnes the only senior centre forward involved at Huddersfield, splashing some of the £50million the Clarets have pocketed from the sales of McNeil, Nathan Collins and Nick Pope on strikers is imperative.
