Burnley lure Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen on a season-long loan

Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen, 20, has completed his move to Burnley on a season-long loan.

The Clarets are midway through orchestrating a summer overhaul following relegation to the Championship, having already waved farewell to Nick Pope, James Tarkowski, Nathan Collins and Wayne Hennessey, as well as Wout Weghorst on loan. 

Maatsen is Burnley's seventh arrival of the transfer window, having previously taken on loan spells at Coventry and Charlton since arriving at Stamford Bridge in 2018.

The youngster scored three Championship goals in 40 matches under Mark Robins last season to help Coventry secure a top half finish on goal difference. 

Having notched just one senior appearance for the Blues in five years - a 24-minute cameo in Chelsea's 7-1 win against Grimsby in the 2019-20 EFL Cup - Maatsen is looking forward to another fresh challenge on loan.

'I'm excited to come here and play for Burnley,' the Dutchman told the club website. 

'It's a big club and a new challenge which I'm ready for. It's a different town, but a new challenge. 

'I look forward to meeting new people and this season will be good for me.'  

Meanwhile, manager Vincent Kompany said: 'We're pleased to add Ian to our team, he's a talented, energetic and pacey player, who can defend and get forward well.

'Ian will be a great addition to our team on and off the pitch.'
