BT apologise after Celtic fans unveil 'F*** the crown' banner during Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk

BT Sport commentator Rob MacLean issued an on-air apology during Celtic’s Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk after the camera panned onto a banner unveiled by the travelling fans which said “F*** the crown”.

MacLean said “apologies to anyone offended” by the message following the passing of Queen Elizabeth. Both sets of players wore black armbands in memory of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch who died last week, aged 96.

But it was announced earlier in the day that there would be no minute’s silence before the match in Legia Warsaw’s Polish Army Stadium with the Ukrainian side are using as a temporary home as their country is at war with neighbours Russia.

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou said on the eve of the Group F clash - where Reo Hatate gave the visitors an early lead - that that the club would mark the occasion in their own way. He said: “I will abide by whatever regulations there are. I’m not the keeper of people’s obligations.

"We live in a society where people can express their own values in any way they want. I will be doing it my way and my club will do it our way, and everyone else can do what they like.”
