Bruno Lage discusses Max Kilman's frame of mind before West Ham vs Wolves

Wolverhampton Wanderers will give Max Kilman all the support he needs after his mother’s homeland, Ukraine, was invaded by Russia.

Russian forces entered neighbouring Ukraine on Thursday morning and hundreds have already been killed.

Kilman’s mother, Maria, is Ukrainian and the Wolves defender was contacted by Andriy Shevchenko over representing the country at last summer’s Euros.

The 24-year-old played 90 minutes in Wolves’ defeat to Arsenal on Thursday evening to maintain his ever-present record under Bruno Lage.

But the Wolves head coach appreciates that news emerging from Ukraine is particularly distressing for Kilman and his family, and insists the club will support their star defender in any way they can.

“I haven’t talked with him about that, but we know,” Lage said. “We have a lot of people to talk with Max. He was OK. We know what the emotional side can be, but we have people to take care of these situations and Wolves will help Max if he needs it.

“He was comfortable in the game. For now, we need to wait and see how these things develop in the next days. I hope it finishes.

“The good wars are those we have here during the 90 minutes, and when it finishes we congratulate each other and go home, not the situation Ukraine is living in at the moment.”

On Sunday, Wolves face a West Ham side whose squad includes Ukraine international Andriy Yarmolenko. David Moyes says Yarmolenko is ‘not in a really good place’ and West Ham have given the winger a few days off.

Lage is being guided by Kilman, but the defender will start at the London Stadium if he is in the right frame of mind.
