Bruno impresses again, Targett shines on left: Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle player ratings
Newcastle United's unbeaten run came to end at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge in harsh circumstances. Kai Havertz scored the winning goal late after the Magpies felt he should have been sent off, while they also had appeals for a second-half penalty turned down
Chelsea were restricted to few chances early on, while Newcastle looked dangerous on the break, without threatening Mendy in the home goal. Jacob Murphy did well to create an opening, but his shot was high and wide.
Newcastle then saw a deep free-kick met by Fabian Schar, but Mendy was alert to prevent the ball cross the box, while at the other end, Mason Mount and Tino Werner both had efforts off target. Dan Burn then went close with a flicked header from Matt Targett's cross as United looked to press.
Chelsea's Kai Havertz went into the book for a flying elbow on Burn. VAR checked the incident but deemed a yellow card was sufficient. Just before the breka, Miguel Almirón's powerful volley from 20 yards was beaten away by Mendy.
Newcastle felt they should have had a penalty when Chalobah brought down Murphy in the box. The referee waved away appeals and VAR decided not to overturn the decision. However Chelsea stoke it late on when Havertz escaped his marker to head home Jorginho's cross.
Here's how Lee Ryder rated the Newcastle players.
The defeat was tough on the Slovakian international after keeping Chelsea at bay throughout a tough encounter.
Battled hard after recall. Not much between the former Liverpool man and Krafth.
Looked unflappable for the most part. Could have nicked it with header at the end.
Has given the manager another big call to make in the next game with a tidy display.
A cruel moment at the end could not disguise the fact Burn was top man
