Bruno Fernandes is not blameless for the biggest problem at Manchester United this season

A well-followed social media account mocked up a cartoon image of Bruno Fernandes noticing there was no VAR in the third round of the FA Cup, implying he knew he could buy a penalty.

The post hasn't been well received by Manchester United fans, who have rightly responded by pointing out Fernandes was caught by Wigan Athletic's Liam Shaw and brought down.

There was minimal contact but enough for a penalty to be awarded and that's the bottom line, while it's likely there wouldn't have been such outrage if the incident hadn't involved Fernandes.

Fernandes is the type of player that every set of supporters in the country would love to have on their side, but naturally, he receives heavy criticism because he doesn't play for their club.

His demeanour on the pitch can rub opposition players, supporters, referees and sometimes even his own fans, up the wrong way, yet below that is a world-class talent and someone capable of brilliance.

Fernandes is regarded among the best signings of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era and his impact was transformational when he signed for £47million from Sporting Lisbon, which was remarkable value.

The midfielder signed for United in January 2020 and scored 12 goals in his first six months at the club, which was followed by an outstanding haul of 28 goals and 17 assists during his first full season (2020/21).

His numbers have dipped since - 10 goals and 14 assists in 2021/22 and 14 goals and 15 assists in 2022/23 - but Fernandes has become a better all-round player and enjoyed an excellent campaign last term.
