Brits issued urgent travel alert over 'very likely' threat of terror attacks in country

The UK Foreign Office has issued a terror alert for an East African country warning that attacks are “very likely”. Travel advice for Djibouti, a country which borders Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia has been updated.

British travellers have been told by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office that the terror risk for the country has been updated. The FCDO said: “Terrorists are very likely to try and carry out attacks in Djibouti.”

Brits are urged to “stay aware of their surroundings at all times”. The FCDO said that attacks could happen in crowded areas frequented by foreign nationals and attacks could be indiscriminate.

Locations where attacks could happen include: transport hubs; hotels, restaurants and bars; shopping areas; religious events; sporting events; and military bases. The FCDO said: “Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

“The terrorist group Al Shabaab may see Djibouti and international interests within Djibouti as legitimate targets. This is because Djibouti participates in the African Union peacekeeping mission, ATMIS, and joins in international support of the Somali government. Al Shabaab has issued public threats against Djibouti.“

As well as the terror alert, the UK Foreign Office also advises against “all travel to the Djibouti-Eritrea border.” British nationals who travel against advice from the FCDO could find their travel insurance invalidated and consular support limited.
