Brits are 'washing up wrong' according to Americans who claim we're making key mistake

An American TikTok user has been left scratching her head over the British approach to washing dishes after diving into a "strange rabbit hole" of videos on the platform.

The woman, who goes by @spirtual_af, encouraged people in the UK to film themselves doing the washing up for her to get "confirmation or denial" of what she had seen. She asked: "Can you show the steps you take to take a dish from dirty to clean please?"

Her video, which quickly racked up a staggering 4.8 million views in just over a week, prompted thousands to flood the comments section to argue that Brits might be going about it all wrong by not rinsing suds away properly. And some TikTok users from across the Atlantic also admitted their surprise at the sight of Brits tackling their chores in a tub of "dirty water".

"I truly hope I didn't see what I think I saw," the woman continued. In light of the confusion, one British TikToker reached out, saying, "I'm from the UK, can an American give an explanation?" adding, "I'm so confused as to what can be confusing about washing dishes."

It was not long before the issue became clear. One baffled American asked: "Are people not running the tap?" Echoing this was another who was puzzled: "Why are people washing up in a bowl of dirty water? Why don't they rinse the soap off?"

A third commented: "American living in the UK here. This is about leaving the soap on, isn't it. Yes. They do. If I'm staying with Brits and they've done the dishes, I sneak in later and rinse everything."
