British woman dead and man missing in Mallorca after tragic incident while hiking

A British woman has been found dead in Mallorca and a British man is still missing after they were reportedly swept away in flash flood, Spanish police said. They were hiking when the incident happened on the Spanish Island on Tuesday.

According to Spain’s Civil Guard, both people were on a trail that leads through a small canyon to the sea when the storm hit. The police initially issued the erroneous information that they had found the body of the man and were searching for the woman. They later said it was the woman who had been found dead on Wednesday.

The Manchester Evening News has contacted the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for a statement. Local news site Majorca Daily Bulletin reported that relatives of the two people were rescued on Tuesday afternoon, with one of them “admitted to a clinic in Palma”. The group were walking in the Torrent de Pareis area, according to the news site.

More inclement weather was forecast for the island and parts of Spain’s mainland. The Balearic Islands and a large area of Spain’s eastern coast was under alert for strong winds and heavy rains.

More thunderstorms over Barcelona forced the organisers of the America’s Cup sailing event to postpone racing. That decision came after lightning struck near a yacht on Tuesday, forcing a race to be abandoned.
