Ryan Reynolds' Wrexham hand Gary Neville and Man United's Class of '92 reality check

"Salford City… are seven promotions away from the Premier League. That's the dream, it could be our greatest ever achievement," Gary Neville told a room of students at Salford University in 2015.

"Is it likely? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe in 10 years, people will be slapping 'naive' across me and I'll be lying bankrupt in a gutter because I've thrown all my money at a load of football players."

It has not quite been ten years yet but two things can be said with certainty - Neville will not be bankrupt in a gutter (his punditry work and businesses have avoided that grizzly fate) and The Ammies will not be in the Premier League. When the Manchester United legend and his Class of '92 teammates bought Salford in the depths of the English football pyramid, they became the 'Hollywood team' that every opponent wanted to beat.

To their credit, Salford managed to handle the pressure well. They gained promotion through the leagues before reaching the promise land of the EFL, each step of the way shown in a brilliant fly-on-the-wall documentary for the BBC and latterly Sky.

Since their promotion to the fourth tier in 2019 though, Salford have stagnated. Neville has stepped down as CEO of the club with Nicky Butt taking on the reins, the documentary has quietly been mothballed and City only just avoided the drop last season.
