British GP: Charles Leclerc talks Silverstone disappointment as win evades him again

Charles Leclerc was left to again rue a strange pit call from Ferrari that left him finishing fourth in the British Grand Prix when he could well have won it.

The Monegasque was leading the Grand Prix at Silverstone when a Safety Car was called as Esteban Ocon ground to a halt in his Alpine just before Copse.

Ferrari, though, opted to leave Leclerc out in the lead and just pitted Sainz behind him, with them feeling that they did not have enough room to double stack the drivers and keep places one and two, with Leclerc on fresher tyres at the time.

Instead, then, Leclerc was left out and with those behind him then on even newer, soft tyres, he was rather a sitting duck as he dropped from first to fourth come the flag.

After the race, Leclerc was spotted in a pretty frank discussion with team boss Mattia Binotto, and he explained what that was about, before evaluating his race as a whole:

“[It was] just to try and cheer me up.

“He tried but then, of course, the disappointment is big today. It’s been a roller coaster race; the first lap I broke the front wing and I thought that it was over then I managed to play around with my toggles and have a bit more of a strong front and then the win was feeling more and more possible, then we had the Safety Car and that was it.

“I was on the limit but I had to [be.]

“In my position I was on used hards, I had to use everything that was possible but to [also I had to] remember the room and the rules.”
