British girl, 14, collapses and dies after eating pizza on holiday in Rome
A British teen has died tragically after consuming pizza and dessert in Rome due to a peanut allergy. The 14 year old, referred to as Skyler by Italian media, was vacationing with her family when the incident occurred.
The UK family were on a week-long trip to the historic city and were staying in the Gianicolense area, reports the Mirror.
Last Thursday, Skyler and her family opted for pizza during their first dinner in Rome at a restaurant, situated near their B&B. Tragically, 15 minutes after eating, the teen began experiencing severe allergic reactions, including throat constriction, trouble breathing, pounding heart, chills, and body tremors.
Her parents sought to soothe her and requested assistance from their B&B staff who called emergency services. However, upon arrival, paramedics discovered Skyler unconscious.
Despite efforts to resuscitate her and transport her to the San Camillo hospital, Skyler succumbed to anaphylactic shock en route, Italian media outlet Corriere della Sera said.
The Monteverde police station has launched an investigation following a discussion with the girl's parents, who revealed she had a peanut allergy. Skyler's family stated that she had previously suffered severe allergic reactions and would therefore avoid anything potentially containing peanuts, meticulously checking food labels.
They also made it a point to ask about allergens when dining out. According to Corriere della Sera, investigators have interviewed the restaurant owners and ASL Roma 3, responsible for health services in that area of the city, has initiated hygiene and health checks, including verifying the presence of allergen lists in the pizza restaurant.
