Bristol City coach gives his verdict as Robins begin their pre-season with a hard-fought win

New first-team coach Jason Euell says Bristol City were always expected to shake off any rustiness in their pre-season victory, emphasising there was an extra focus on individual performances rather than as a collective.

The Robins dominated against League One Cheltenham but had to bide their time before taking the lead when 10 outfield changes helped finally break the deadlock through George Tanner in the 68th minute.

Cam Pring, replacing Jay Dasilva, found space out on the left and his cross eluded Sam Bell and Tommy Conway in the box but found the feet of Tanner who made no mistake with a well-taken effort.

Chris Martin should have put the Robins ahead from the spot moments into the second half when Rob Atkinson was bundled to the turf but the veteran hammered his effort over the top of the crossbar.

City dominated possession and if it wasn't for Max Harris in the Cheltenham goal they should have had more. He notably denied Kane Wilson and Joe Williams while Andi Weimann clipped the post upon his introduction.

With just seconds left on the clock, the lead was doubled when Pring again turned provider with his cross finding Tommy Conway in the area. The young striker hit it first time on the penalty spot as City kicked off their pre-season with a win.

It was a decent showing although City will feel they could have been more ruthless going forward particularly in the first half as their attack at times struggled to click.

But Euell, who was announced last week, believes the most important thing was getting the minutes under their belt as the new players in particular continue to discover their roles in the side.
