Brighton and Hove Albion set to let go of midfielder ahead of EFL switch
Brighton could be about to let another of their young talents head out on loan next season, with Exeter closing in on a deal for Marc Leonard, as reported by Football Insider.
The 20-year-old is drawing plenty of interest and it looks increasingly likely that he will spend his next season playing somewhere else, whether that be in the Football League or elsewhere.
It will be good though for the Scotland man to get some more experience under his belt, with the player having yet to really feature for the Seagulls. He’s never played a league game for the side as of yet and will be desperate to get into some more competitive action.
Instead, Leonard has had to make do with merely playing for the club’s reserve side. He’s made 39 appearances for that side and bagged nine goal contributions along the way and if he can produce similar showings in a first-team somewhere, then he could prove to be a shrewd signing for a club.
Exeter currently appear to be the most likely to land his signature too. They’re preparing for a 2022/23 campaign that will be spent in League One and will want to ensure that they are well-equipped to push on and avoid the relegation spots.
Leonard is unproven in the EFL as of yet but his showings for the Brighton academy suggest he is worthy of a chance. Now, Exeter are prepared to let him come to them and play some games – and it could prove to be an astute move for the club on a short-term basis, as he could be raring to go and prove himself on the field.
The Verdict
Brighton won’t be playing Leonard this season you would have thought, with Graham Potter having his own players that he has brought in who will be above him in the pecking order.
