Brendan Rodgers teases Celtic transfer marquee signing but insists model can still turn £3m bargain into £30m superstar

Brendan Rodgers insists he’ll stick to the Celtic model of buying in cheap and selling stars for top dollar as he addressed marquee signings.

The Hoops boss has a pot of cash to spend following the £25m sale of Jota to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia to add to a bumper club kitty. Rodgers is expected to splash out on players for a crack at the Champions League. But he admitted he won’t stray too far from Celtic’s successful wheeling and dealing in the transfer market – and his target is to turn a £2m signing into a £30m superstar. Rodgers – who is set to seal deals for Korean prospects Yang Hyun-jun and Kweon Hyeok-kyo in the coming days – said: “Yes, there’s money there, but it doesn’t always mean if you spend £9m or £10m you are going to get a top player. There might be someone within your academy or someone at £2m or £3m that can become a £20m or £30m player. My strength is development and I’ve working closely with the people here to improve the squad.”

Rodgers admitted there may be patience required when it comes to ready-made signings as targets will have several clubs in the hunt and may want to keep their options open with six weeks remaining in the window. Celts have cracked up the wages of top stars such as Callum McGregor, Kyogo and Daizen Maeda.

Brendan Rodgers is back as manager as the Treble winners target another season of domination in Scotland and a shot at glory in the Champions League.
