Brendan Rodgers takes responsibility as Leicester City selection plan for corners falls short

Brendan Rodgers changed Leicester City’s system in order to help them defend corners – and they still conceded from the only one Everton had.

Having conceded from 22 set-pieces across the season before Sunday’s game, and having seen it contribute to their exit from the Europa Conference League last Thursday, Rodgers chose to make changes. He switched to a back three to face the Toffees, reintroducing taller players in Daniel Amartey and Timothy Castagne to the side alongside Wesley Fofana and Jonny Evans.

But for the third game running, City conceded from a corner. Demarai Gray’s ball in was met by Richarlison, whose downward header was saved but not parried out of danger by Kasper Schmeichel, with Mason Holgate nodding in the rebound.

Rodgers was frustrated that his changes did not work, and that the goal came from the only corner Everton had in the game. He also said it was his responsibility to keep looking for a fix over the final four matches of the campaign before the transfer window allows for a more permanent solution.

“The biggest disappointment was the corner,” Rodgers said in his post-match press conference. “They had one corner in the game and to concede from that…

“I changed the system to try to put extra height into the team because I do think we have lacked the profile of player to help us defend it. Today I don’t think it was that, it was just sheer determination and the lack of that to defend the ball into the box.

“That’s on me. I need to keep looking at it this year to try to make it right until the summer when we can actually do something about it.”
