Brendan Rodgers 'knocks back' Leeds as Celtic path cleared after boss takes firm Championship stance

In-demand Brendan Rodgers has reportedly pulled himself out of the running to become Leeds United manager - giving the boss a clear path to join Celtic.

The Elland Road outfit launched an eleventh hour attempt to derail the return of the Northern Irishman to Parkhead, after talks with the Celtic board and majority shareholder Dermot Desmond saw a move for Rodgers to the Scottish champions rapidly gather pace. The cash-rich American owners at Leeds United - who are also in charge of NFL franchise San Francisco 49ers - looked to launch a late bid to tempt the boss to lead their bid to return to the English Premier League after relegation last term.

However, their attempts appear to have been knocked back by Rodgers as The Athletic report Rodgers has indicated to Leeds that he does not plan on dropping to the Championship as his next step after leaving Leicester City. Despite being invited to interview for the post Rodgers has been “resistant” to a move to the English Football League.

Rodgers was the "favoured option" of 49ers Enterprises. However, he has "indicated firmly" that he does not wish to be considered for the vacancy. The move leaves Rodgers with a clear path to return to Celtic Park this summer.
