Brendan Rodgers has major Celtic flipside to consider but he'll win doubters over as long as he beats Rangers - Kenny Miller

Some people say you should never go back. But that’s where myself and Brendan Rodgers have something in common.

Because when there’s an opportunity to return to Celtic or Rangers, it’s hard to turn down. And in my case, that’s even true when you’ve played on the opposite side of the divide. When I got the phone call in summer 2008 about going back to Ibrox, I didn’t even have to think about it. It was a unique situation. Not just because I’d previously been at Celtic. But because of one man, Walter Smith. I had just worked under him for Scotland the year before.

Ally McCoist was obviously there as well and followed him to Rangers. So there was nothing to ponder for me. It was a no-brainer. I wanted to play for the club again – and for the manager. It was probably one of the easiest transfer decisions of my career.

The fan reaction to it? That didn’t even cross my mind. People find that hard to believe, I know. But genuinely, I didn’t even give it a thought. As you’d expect, there was opposition to me coming back. But it never bothered me one bit.

Had Walter not been in charge, I wouldn’t have got back to Rangers. No other boss would have entertained it – because I’d played for Celtic.

I knew there would be negativity around it but that’s never affected me throughout my career. That’s just my character and mentality. I’ve a thick skin. Sometimes in life, those character traits can be a hindrance. But when it comes to dealing with difficult situations, it definitely helps.

When you play for Rangers or Celtic, there’s a mindset you must have to succeed. A lot of good players have come here and it hasn’t been for them.
