Brendan Rodgers Celtic presser in full as Tom Rogic gets emotional retirement tribute from 'sad' former boss

Brendan Rodgers has a Champions League date with destiny to contend with - but there's been time for a look to the past ahead of Celtic's latest challenge.

It's group stage matchday two for the Hoops on Wednesday as Lazio come to Glasgow. Feyenoord beat the Premiership champions 2-0 on matchday one but the first clash at Parkhead provides another chance for Celtic to open up their Group E account. Ahead of the game, the club and its fans paid tribute to Tom Rogic, who announced on Tuesday morning he is retiring from the game at age 30 as he prepares to welcome twins.

Rodgers worked with the mercurial Australian during his first stint in charge as the playmaker wrote himself into the history books as a Celtic legend by winning 16 major trophies across 273 appearances. The Irishman says the announcement is something he totally gets, even if he's slightly saddened by it.

He said: "It was sad I have to say when I seen the news. I haven't spoken to Tom yet but when I seen it, 30 years of age is still so young in the modern game.

"But knowing Tom as well as I do, I know family meant everything to him. And when you read his script of the reasons why, then I totally understand that.

"In terms of what he gave as a football player in my time here, he was absolutely amazing. You talk about big moments, big goals, that usually defines the best players and throughout his time here he produced all of that.

"His contribution in my time was second to none, a joy to work with and he's clearly family orientated which is also nice to see. Football is our life and passion but it's not everything, family is most important and for him as a young father to spend more time with his family, that was also a priority for him.
