Daniel Kelly has been labelled a real 'rough diamond' and told why he MUST stay at Celtic.

The Hoops' talented teen has been told he won't be part of the Scottish champions' pre-season plans after failing to put pen to paper on fresh terms at Parkhead. His current arrangement expires on December 31 and he has several clubs monitoring his situation including Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen. Rocco Vata has already jumped ship this summer for the English Championship with Watford but Celtic are hoping to persuade Kelly to stay around in Glasgow for the long-term.

Brendan Rodgers has previously revealed that the Hoops have offered Kelly a bumper pay package to remain but while there is uncertainty over his future, he can't involve him in his plans for the new campaign. Jim Duffy - speaking during the week on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard - reckons the youngster could become a top player and has told him why sticking with Celtic is the best thing for his development. He's pointed to both the Rodgers and fan factors and is in total belief he is good enough to force his way in.

He said: "That's the reason why some of the Celtic fans are a wee bit apprehensive about the Daniel Kelly situation. Rocco Vata has already left. A talented young player. You don't want to be losing your talented 17-18 year olds. It is harder at Celtic, there’s no doubt, but I think Kelly is a talent.

“I know again we’re going about structure and budgets but I think they’ve got to push it out a little bit to try and keep, which I think is, a real rough diamond. I think he could be a top player.
