Breaking OJ Simpson dies aged 76, says family

Former American football player-turned-actor OJ Simpson has died at the age of 76, his family has said in a statement.

"On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer," his family wrote.

"He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace."

Simpson was acquited in 1995 in the so-called "trial of the century" for the brutal murders of his wife and a male friend.
