BREAKING: Murder probe dropped after death of woman, 31, as man de-arrested

A murder investigation has been ‘stood down’ following a day of questioning, police have announced.

Cops arrested a man, 36, yesterday (December 1) after being called to a home on Bateson Street in Stockport at 1.15am on Friday morning. Tragically, a 31-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the time, Detective Inspector Chris Aunins, from GMP’s Stockport division, said officers believed it was ‘an isolated incident’, and the force was ‘committed to finding answers’. Less than 24 hours on, however, the murder probe has been dropped.

The 36-year-old man has been de-arrested and released with no further action, GMP has also confirmed. A post-mortem examination has not been able to ascertain a cause of death but GMP says it has ‘carried out extensive enquiries and is satisfied there are no suspicious circumstances’.

Following the de-arrest, DI Aunins said: "I would like to reassure the public that a rigorous investigation is ongoing to determine exactly what caused this lady's death. I can however confirm it is no longer being treated as a murder investigation and further tests will be carried out."
