BREAKING: Major Manchester road shut as police and firefighters called to scene

Emergency services have scrambled as a busy north Manchester road is closed off due to a 'police incident'. Officers and firefighters are currently at the scene on the A664 Rochdale Road, near to Boggart Hole Clough in Blackley, while eyewitnesses have reported seeing an air ambulance nearby.

The road has been closed off since around 3.15pm, according to the Inrix traffic monitoring system. A cordon is in place between Old Road, in Harpurhey, and Middleton Old Road, in Blackley.

In an update posted on Twitter, a spokesperson for Transport for Greater Manchester wrote: "ROAD CLOSED. A664 Rochdale Road is closed between Charlestown Road and Moston Lane.

"This is due to a police incident. Divert via Charlestown Road and Moston Lane in both directions. Local bus services are on diversion, please check with your operator."

Drivers are being told to expect congestion on other roads nearby in north Manchester as motorists avoid the scene. Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service have all been approached for comment.
