Boy stabbed in Manchester city centre in horror attack near tram stop - full police statement

A boy was rushed to hospital after being stabbed near a tram stop in Manchester city centre on Monday evening (August 12).

Police and paramedics descended on busy Portland Street at around 8.15pm to reports of the knife attack. The victim, whose age has not been disclosed, was taken to hospital from the scene.

A number of police vehicles raced to the incident near to Piccadilly Gardens on blue lights, with the busy main road taped off for a number of hours amid investigations into the horror attack.

A large cordon has been set up, stretching from the Jamboree restaurant to the junction with Aytoun Street. Buses have also been diverted as police worked at the scene.

No arrests have been made in relation to the attack, with investigations ongoing. The victim's injuries were described as serious but non life-threatening.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 8.15pm this evening (Monday 12 August 2024), we were called to reports of a stabbing on Portland Street in the city centre.

"A boy has been taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are described as not-life threatening. No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."
