Boy, 16, arrested after throwing 'large kitchen knife' and 'burner phone' as he ran from police

A 16-year-old boy was arrested after throwing a 'large kitchen knife' and 'burner phone' to the ground as he ran away from police in Levenshulme.

At around 3pm on Tuesday (July 9), police patrolling Farrant Road saw a vehicle with four men sat inside wearing balaclavas. The group then quickly fled, with one member approached by officers in a nearby alleyway.

As he ran off and a foot chase ensued, Greater Manchester Police said he threw a large kitchen knife to the ground as well as a Nokia phone, believed to be a 'burner' device relating to drugs. After he was searched, 70 wraps of suspected drugs were found on him.

The 16-year-old boy was then arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article and possession with intent to supply Class A drugs and remains in custody for questioning.

PC Butler of GMP's Operation Venture team said: “This arrest and incident is what our team is focussed on tackling robustly, to make sure we can protect our communities and prevent where possible serious violence. Our deployments in areas such as this is based off evidence we gather and means we can target suspected criminals in the act.

“The co-ordinated work we do across the force as a team is continuing with both high-visibility patrols and undercover officers embedding themselves within key hotspot areas. We would always encourage members of the public to report anything they think is suspicious or causing them concern so we can look to act on it.”
