Bologna are 'keen' to sign Motherwell starlet as interest mounts from Italy

Serie A side Bologna are believed to be keeping tabs on Motherwell defender Max Johnston, who has attracted a lot of interest due to his performances this season.

The 19-year-old has excelled in the Motherwell first team since being recalled from a loan spell at Cove Rangers and scored a spectacular winner in the 2-1 win over St Mirren in then-caretaker boss Stuart Kettlewell's first game in charge.

Johnston, who can operate as a full back of wing back, has been ever-present under his new gaffer.

Bologna snapped up Lewis Ferguson from Aberdeen last summer and he has proved to be a huge success, and Aaron Hickey was prised from Hearts before that. It's no surprise that the Italian giants might return to Scotland for their next rising star.

They might face competition for Johnston's signature from English Premier League side Brighton, while Championship clubs Preston North End, Sheffield United and Luton Town are also reportedly interested.

The Daily Record reports that Italian publication Corriere dello Sport reckon Bologna are winning the chase, and Motherwell could be due nearly £200,000 in training compensation for the youngster, who is out of contract at the end of this season.
