Body of missing well known former postman is found after two month search

Police searching for a man who disappeared two and a half months ago have found his body. Steven Caulfield disappeared in Stockport.

The 70-year-old was spotted in the vicinity of the golf course next to Middlewood Way in Marple at around 4pm on Tuesday, October 1. Painstaking searches have been carried out and appeals have been shared hundreds of times on social media.

Police also shared CCTV footage of the moments he was last seen, but to no avail. Steven, was well-known as a postman before his retirement. CCTV showed that Steven was wearing a distinctive blue parka-style coat with a fur hood and a baseball cap when he went missing.

In an update today Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 12pm today (Wednesday December 11th) a GMP officer sadly located a body in a woodland area near to Middlewood Way in Stockport.

"At this time, we believe this is likely to be Steven Caulfield who went missing in Stockport on Tuesday 1st October 2024. His next of kin have been made aware and are currently being supported by officers. His Majesty’s Senior Coroner for Manchester West has also been informed.

"Steven was reported missing on Tuesday 1st October 2024 by his family, after he failed to return from a walk. An extensive missing person investigation was launched by Stockport detectives, alongside a widespread search by specialist GMP officers.

A number of missing appeals were also published on social media and shared widely, not just in Greater Manchester but across the UK, and we are grateful to the public for their support providing information on possible sightings."

Police said there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding Steven's death, and a file will now be prepared for the coroner.
