Body found after huge mountain rescue search for vulnerable missing man

A body has been found in the search for a vulnerable missing man, aged in his 70s, after he was reported missing.

North Yorkshire Police have confirmed that a body has been discovered in the search for Howard Gibbs. Mr Gibbs, from Askrigg in Wensleydale, was reported missing yesterday (May 31), prompting a huge search by emergency services and local residents.

The body was found near Mill Gill near Askrigg by Mountain Rescue volunteers who were assisting police officers with the search. The body has yet to be formally identified but officers have informed Mr Gibbs' family, YorkshireLive reports.

In a statement, the force said: "In the early hours of this morning, Saturday, June 1, we issued an appeal to find a missing man in his 70s from Askrigg in Wensleydale."

"Sadly, earlier today, the body of a man was found near Mill Gill near Askrigg by Mountain Rescue Volunteers who were assisting officers with the search."

"Although formal identification has yet to take place, we believe the man to be missing Howard. His family have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time."

"Officers believe there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. Thank you to everyone who shared our appeal."
