Blashill will not return as Red Wings head coach

The Detroit Red Wings and executive vice president Steve Yzerman have announced that the team will not renew the contract of head coach Jeff Blashill.

Blashill, 48, was hired as head coach of the Red Wings on June 9, 2015 following Mike Babcock’s departure.

Detroit made the postseason in Blashill’s first season in 2015-16 but have missed the playoffs six years in a row as they finished 26 points out of a playoff spot in 2021-22.

In 537 games as head coach of the Red Wings, the team went 204-261-72.
