Birmingham City transfers: Every Championship deal as Bristol City and Cardiff lead the way

Birmingham City are still to sign their first player of the summer transfer window with the club’s ownership in a state of flux. Enquiries are still being made and a list of potential targets has been drawn up but as things stand no deals have completed.

Although Blues are far from alone, several of their Championship rivals have already been active in the market as managers look to strengthen their squads ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Cardiff have been one of the most proactive with Callum O’Dowda one of five new signings as manager Steve Morison improves his side. Recently relegated Watford, Norwich and Burnley have all been quiet thus far, despite parachute payments that will ease the burden on their drop from the top flight.

Bristol City have been another of the busier clubs with Nigel Pearson wasting no time in getting players through the door. The manager was eager to reiterate the lack of transfer funds available over the summer and the Robins have certainly been shrewd by pulling off the captures of Mark Sykes, Kal Naismith and Kane Wilson on free transfers to give the club a solid platform to build on for the rest of the summer before the campaign gets back underway at the end of July.

Blues have looked into the possibility of bringing Jack Butland back to St Andrew’s, while they are also keen on the likes of Alfie Mawson and Josh Maja but with the financial restraints on football clubs as they remain in recovery from the pandemic, Blues are one of many who will have to be creative with their business.

That could be evident with the lack of Championship business concluded so far - with 15 clubs yet to do any deals at all.
