Birmingham City and Andre Wisdom: Derby County old boy set to step up contract bid

Andre Wisdom is starting his second week training with Birmingham City.

The 28-year-old is a free agent meaning Blues can still offer a contract despite the closure of the transfer window..

Wisdom has not played since leaving Derby in the summer - indeed it’s been 10 months since his last game.

So what’s the state of play? Here’s what we know so far.

Last Monday Blues were already without Marc Roberts and George Friend until March 5.

That was before Teden Mengi had a scan which revealed a hamstring strain and which kept him out against Stoke.

Blues played without any recognised centre halves at the Bet365 Stadium and while they got away with it, they were taking a chance.

Mengi is ‘day to day’ according to Lee Bowyer but Wisdom’s ability to play both centre half and right back makes him an attractive option.

He was expected to re-sign with Derby but having not reached an agreement the Rams were hit with a transfer embargo leaving Wisdom in limbo. The full explanation can be found here.

Speaking on Thursday he said: “He has looked OK but he’s a lad who has not played football since just before I came here, before we played Derby at the end of last season.

“It’s good to see him, of course he is not fit at the moment, no matter how much running you do yourself away from the game it’s impossible to get match fit.

“He will keep training with us, we will see how far we can get him in a short space of time but it’s good to have him around – he’s a good player.

“A lot better than I thought he was going to be on the ball, in possession he is very comfortable, it’s just the fitness side which is obviously not his fault.
